er MONTHLY STATUS REPORT-JUNE 1998 Georgia Tech Research Reactor Decommissioning Program Monthly Status Report for June 1998 A. General The GTRR remains under a safe shutdown condition. The reactor facility is in compliance with its license conditions and current technical specifications (10CFR50.51(b)).

B. Activities for the Month ofJune 1998

1. A " Letter ofIntent" was received on June 29,1998, signed by the Director of the Office of Planning and Budget, State of Georgia. The letter confirms that the State of Georgia supports the cost estimate for the decommissioning of the GTRR, and will seek to obtain the required

' funds for decommissioning when necessary.

2. The GTRR Technical Safety Review Committee approved the Drafl Decommissioning Plan on June 5,1998.
3. The GTRR initiated the transfer of heavy water from facility holding tanks into approved shipping drums in accordance with procedures approved by the GTRR Technical Safety Review Committee. The transfer to shipping drums will be completed in early July.

C. Planned Activities in July

1. Submit the Draft Decommissioning Man to USNRC.
2. Ship the heavy water back to DOE-Aiken. We received drums for shipment of heavy water on 18 March 1998. Procedures were written by the Neely Nuclear Research Center staff, and the Technical Safety Committee reviewed and approved these procedures on 29 May 1998. Transfer of heavy water to shipping drums will be completed in July. The shipment is scheduled to be picked up on 20 July 1998, with arrival at DOE-Aiken on 21 July 1998.
