MONTHLY STATUS REPORT- MARCH 1998 Docket No. 50-160 Georgia Tech Research Reactor Decommissioning Program Monthly Status Report for March 1998 A. General The GTRR remains under a safe shutdown condition. The reactor facility is in compliance with its license conditions and current technical specifications (10CFR50.51(b)).

B. Activities for the Month of March 1998

1. A letter was submitted by Georgia Tech to the Director, Office of Planning and Budget, State of Georgia, requesting a Letter of Financial Intent to provide the necessary funding to j complete the decommissioning of the GTRR.

2.- Ongoing review of the Radiological and 11azardous Characterization Report prepared by NES.

3. Ongoing review of the Decommissioning Plan prepared by NES.
4. The detailed Decommissioning Cost Estimate was revised by NES to incorporate Georgia Tech comments and was used as the basis for requesting a Financial Letter ofIntent.

C. Planned Activities

1. Finalize the Decommissioning Plan and submit to USNRC. Target date for submittal is now May 15,1998.
2. Ship the heavy water back to DOE-Aiken. We received notification from the Department of Energy, Savannah River Operations Office, indicating that drums for shipment of heavy water will be available on March 1,1998. Drums were received on 18 March. Shipment of heavy water is projected to take place in May 1998.
