Conversion to Low Enrichment Fuel (LEU)

In accordance with 10 CFR 50.64 (C.2) and on behalf of the Georgia Institute of Technology I hereby notify U.S.N.R.C. that the  ;

Department of Energy funding for converting the Georgia Tech Research Reactor fuel from high to: low enrichment will be available during this fiscal year. A copy of a letter from Mr. Richard Stephens is enclosed.

We plan to submit a proposal to DOE some time in April. We scheduled a meeting on March 20, 1989 with Dr. Armando Travelli and Dr. James Matos of Argonne National Laboratory to discuss the detailed program for converting to LEU. A copy of the proposal to DOE will be mailed to you at the appropriate time.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Dear Dr. Karam:

i This letter is to ' inform you that funding will be available in FY 1989 through' ~ I the U.S. Department of Energy to initiatc the conversion of your reactor from

HEU to LEU fuel. It is requested, therefore, that you submit a proposal, including a detailed cost estimate, to accomplish the safety analysis phase of the conversion. The proposal should not include costs: for the new fuel, spent fuel. cask rental, or fuel shipping since these tasks are being handled by others.

You are also reminded that technical assistance for safety documentation review and analysis is available through the 1ERTR program at the Argonne National Laboratory. Your proposal should be coordinated with and reflect the degree of support to be provided by RERTR/ANL.
