Dear Mr. White:

i

SUBJECT:

SEQUOYAH, UNITS 1 AND 2, RESPONSE TO GEllERIC LETTER 88-05 i (TAC R003601/R00361) (MPA B.10) l On March 17, 1988, the NRC staff issued Generic letter (GL) 88-05, "Boric Acid Corrosion of Carbon Steel Reactor Boundary Components in PWR Plants." In this l letter we requested that you provide assurances that a program has been implemented at your plant (s) that addresses the corrosive effects of reactor coolant system leakage at less than technical specification limits. The generic letter identified four considerations which your program should l

include.

By letters dated June 1 and July 29, 1988, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) submitted responses to GL 88-05 describing its comitment to a boric acid leakage r:enitoring and preventive action program at Sequoyah. We find tnat  !

you have provided assurance that a program will be in place dealing with boric acid leakage that potentially could affect the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary. This fulfills your requirement in responding to GL 88-05.

{ Enclosed is the staff's Safety Evaluation of the responses to the generic l letter.

Follow.up audits by NRC personnel of selected plants are to be perfortned in the future. The Sequoyah site should be in the population fron which plants are selected for the audits.

As discussed in GL 88-05, you should maintain, in auditable form, records of the program and results obtained from implementation of the program. These records may be subject to future auditing.

Sincerely,

%MM$
