Harrisburg, PA' 17110 Gentlemen:-

SUBJECT:

Noncompliance with NPDES Permit Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Permit'No. PA 0009733 DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The biological oxygen demand (BOD) of a sample from discharge point 108 (Sewage Treatment Plant) exceeded the permit limit.

Date Sample Taken: 4-18-85 Date Results Received: 4-29-85 Results of Analysis: 130 mg/l Permit Limitation: 45 mg/l CAUSE-OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The cause of the noncompliance is believed to be pin floc carryover'from the clarifier. It is unknown what is causing the pin floc. carryover.

DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

U The duration of the noncompliance is unknown since this is a continuation of the April 4, 1985 exceedance which was previously reported. ,

' CORRECTIVE ACTION:

~The Sewage Treatment Plant pressure filters were returned to service on April 19, 1985. It is believed that the effluent was within permit limits upon utilization of the pressure filters. The final effluent was resampled for BOD on April 25, 1985. The result of this sample'was 10 mg/1. The result of a sample for BOD on the equalization basin'on April 19 was 288 mg/1 and the result of a BOD sample of unchlorinated effluent was 31 mg/1. This represents a 89 percent decrease in. BOD by the sewage treatment plant. ,

r PREVENTION OF FUTURE OCCURRENCES:

Although the pressure filters have brought the effluent into compliance, we are continuing our efforts to correct the pin floc carrover from the clarifier. . Increased surveillance and sampling is being maintained to help determine and reduce the cause of the carryover.
