Noncompliance with NPDES Permit Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Permit No. PA 0009733 Gentlemen:

DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The pH of a sample from discharge point 301 (Wastewater Settling Basin) exceeded the permit limit.

Date Sample Taken: 2/10/86 Date Results Received: 2/10/86 Results of Analysis: 12.1 -

Permit Limitation: 6.0 to 9.0 Note: Per telephone discussion Mr. Ed Correveau of the DER, the pH limitation for this internal discharge point will be remove.1 from the permit.

CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The cause of the noncompliance was that the raw water sump pH meter was placer 1 in " standby" and allowed high pH water to go to the Settling Basin.

DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The duration of the noncompliance is estimated to be four hou rs .

i CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The settling basin was neutralized with alum. The raw water sump pH meter was placed in " measure".

PREVENTION OF FUTURE OCCURRENCES:

A modification to the pH monitor will be investigated to prevent discharging when the monitor is~in standby.
