Noncompliance with NPDES Permit Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Permit No. PA 0009733 DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The biological oxygen demand (' BOD) of a sample from discharge point 108 (Sewage Treatment Plant) exceeded the permit limit.

Date Sample Taken: 5-1-85 Date Results Received: 5-10-85 Results of Analysis 48 mg/l p Permit Limitation: 45 mg/l CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

, The cause of this non-compliance is unknown at this l

time. The operating records were reviewed for the period prior l to and including May 1, 1985. All the indicating parameters l'

appeared to be within normal values. In addition grab samples of the equalization basin and of the unchlorinated effluent were taken May 1, 1985. The results were 245 mg/l BOD and 28 mg/l BOD respectively which indicates a 89 percent decrease in BOD by the sewage treatment plant.

The duration of the noncompliance is unknown but it appears to be an intermittent problem.

No corrective action was taken at this time. The Chemistry Section is investigating and conducting further tests to determine'the cause of the problem.

PREVENTION OF FUTURE OCCURRENCES:

i Operational controls and monitoring have been increased.

Inlet as well as effluent samples will be analyzed on a regular basis to determine system operating efficiency. By increasing surveillance of the system by Operations and Chemistry, problems such as this will be minimized in the future.
