SUBJECT:
Noncompliance with NPDES Permit Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station i Permit No. PA 0009733 Gentlemen:
DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
The BOD of two samples from. discharge point 501-(Sewage
' Treatment Plant) exceeded the monthly average and the instantaneous maximum permit limits.
Date' Sample Taken: 9/11/87 9/24/87 Date Results Received: 9/19/87 .10/5/87 Results-of Analysis: 38 mg/l 96 mg/l Monthly Average Analysis: 67 mg/l Monthly Average Permit Limitation: 30 mg/l Monthly Average 60 mg/1-Instantaneous' maximum CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
1 The cause of the noncompliance was excessive carryover from the clarifiers. Clarifier carryover was due to poor settling characteristics of the solids. This has been an occasional problem with the clarifiers. Also, the pressure filters had been removed from service due to a broken sparger plate.
DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
The duration of-the noncompliance was the entire month of September, {
j I
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The corrective action was to reduce the solids being passed through the system.

- PREVENTION OF FURTHER OCCURRENCES:
The damaged pressure filter is being repaired and will be returned to service by.the end of October. An engineering consultant (BCM) was scheduled in to' evaluate operation of the sewage treatment plant. The BCM consultant visited on site on October 16, 1987. Per his recommendation the second aeration tank was put into service on October 19, 1987. A sewage ;
treatment plant operator training course was contracted from BCM for several Peach Bottom employees. This course will commence November 5, 1987.
