Noncompliance with NPDES Permit Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Permit No. PA 0009733 Gentlemen:

DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The pH of a sample from discharge point 301 (Wast ewa tur Settling Basin) exceeded the permit limit.

Date Samples Taken 11/17 Date Results Received: 11/17 Results of Analysis: 11.1 Permit Limitation: 6.0 to 9.0 CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The cause of the noncompliance was a Neutralizing Tank overflow before it was neutralized.

DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The duration of noncompliance was approximately three hours.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Acid was added to the settling basin to bring the pH within the allowable range.

PREVENTION OF FUTURE OCCURRENCES l

The mechanisms have been in place which should preclude this

l event from occuring. The systems procedures provide for t neutralizint of tanks prior to release and inline pH meters on the discharge pumps and the raw water sump assure the water pH is

, within range prior to discharge to the settling basin.

Our investigation of this event has not identified the specific cause of this event. The possibility exists that the water pH meter was in bypass at the time of the neturalizing tank overflow. Remedial training of operations personnel responsible for these operations will be conducted during the first quarter of 1986.
