DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
The pH of a sample from discharge point 301 (Waste Water Settling Basin) exceeded the permit limit.

5.0 Permit Limitation:
6.0 to 9.0 CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
When the acid day tank for the water plant demineralizers was drained in preparation for maintenance, the acid inadvertently entered the raw water pump through an open drain valve on a neutralizing tank.
When the sump was being recirculated to neutralize *it, some of the acid went to the settling basin.
DURATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE:
The duration of noncompliance was approximately two hours.

- CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Liquid sodium hydroxide was added to the settling basin to bring the pH into the acceptable range.

PREVENTION OF FUTURE OCCURRENCES :
A letter was written to shift supervision suggesting neutralization of the raw water sunp should be accomplished by processing the water back through the neutralization tank.
A copy of the letter was also forwarded to the training section.
