The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS TVA's Manager of Power and Engineering informed the Regional Administrator today that he has directed the orderly shutdown of Sequoyah Units 1 and 2. He is taking this action as the result of an independent contractor's concerns that the documentation may be inadequate for environmental qualification of electrical equipment at all TVA sites, as well as concerns about certain technical issues. The Sequoyah units are currently the

, only TVA plants in operation.

Preliminary plans by TVA are for Sequoyah Unit 2 to be taken out of service today and to proceed to cold shutdown. Unit I will be taken out of service once Unit 2 is in a stable shutdown condition.

TVA plans to announce the shutdowns today. Region II is prepared to respond to inquiries.

The State of Tennessee has been informed.
