==Dear Mr. Hunter:==

I am responding to your letter of December 22, 1986 to Chaiman Zech concerning Seabrook. Spacifically you asked (a) if NRC has conducted a study of the feasibility of entombing the Seabrook nuclear plant, and (b) if not, was entombment, such as at Chernobyl, possible. While your letter was not specific on this point, we assume you were referring to entombment in the event a severe core _ damage accident were to occur.
The NRC has not conducted any studies of the feasibility of entombing Seabrook or any other nuclear plant following a severe core damage event. However, j
should an entembment be needed, because of containment failure or other concerns, we see no impediment te providing protection similar to that provided ct Chernobyl.
I believe this infomation is responsive to ycur State Representative's questions.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Hunter:

Sincerely,

/f. A Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reacter Regulation 8703260582 870319 PDR ADOCK 05000443 U PDR Wv>Nn & [2x gj
