NUCLEAR PROJECT 3 AND 5 DOCKET NUMBERS 50-508 AND 50-509 IE BULLETIN 83-05 The subject IE Bulletin requested that holders of construction permits sub-mit a report describing the actions taken or planned regarding ASME nuclear code pumps and spare parts manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Compe v.

It was requested that the report be submitted within 90 days of receipt of the Bulletin.

The attachment to this letter provides our report describing actions or plans for WNP-3 and WNP-5 regarding the items identified in the subject Bulletin.

WNP-3 AND WNP-5 REPORT RESPONDING TO NRC IE BULLETIN 83-05 The following is the WNP-3 and WNP-5 report responding to the individual items of NRC IE Bulletin 83-05.

1.a. The following ASME Code Pumps manufactured by HTPC will be used in WNP-3 for the service application identified:

Pump Service Number of Pumps Condensate Makeup 2 Fuel Pool Cooling 2 Component Cooling Water 4 HVAC Chilled Water 2 An evaluation has been performed which has resulted in an indication that no ASME Code safety related Hayward Tyler Pumps have been pro-vided as part of other vendor contracts (including Combustion Engineer-ing).

1.b. The inservice test requirements for WNP-3 pumps will be specified in the WNP-3 Pump and Valve test program. This program will be prepared and submitted no later than six months prior to commerical operation.

1.c. Complete plans for testing the subject WNP-3 Hayward Tyler Pumps are not available at this time. However, the testing plans for these pumps will contain the criteria of Attachment 2 of IE Bulletin 83-05 in addition to the 48-hour test specified in action 1.c of the Bulletin.

1.d. ASME Code system hydrostatic pressure tests have not yet been per-formed on the WNP-3 systems in which the Hayward Tyler Pumps are installed. The system hydrostatic pressure tests will be performed on the systems when construction has been completed to a sufficient extent to make the test results meaningful. Attached is the pro-cedure presently in effect for pressure testing by our contractor, Peter Kiewit Sons' Company. The ASME Code system hydrostatic pressure tests on the WNP-3 systems in which the HTPC pumps are installed will include the pump pressure boundaries.

2.a. WNP-3 will implement the Hayward Tyler recommendations given in Attachment 3 of IE Bulletin 83-05 in our Hayward Tyler pump maintenance procedures.

2.b. See our response to 1.b above.

2.c. A pump performance test as specified in Item 1.c. will be performed as part of proof of operability testing unless it can be demonstrated that the spare parts in question will not affect any parameters that i

are measured or function demonstrated by the test.

2.d. The appropriate type of hydrostatic pressure test will be performed to verify integrity of the ASME pressure boundary formed by the spare part.

6. Both the NRC and recipient permit holders or licensees will be notified of the disposition of the WNP-5 Hayward Tyler pumps if they are sold or transferred to another nuclear plant site.
