U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page Two NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 3. WNP-3 PRESERVATION PROGRAM The most significant change made to WMC-051, Appendix A, was the realignment of preventive maintenance for rotating equipment based on the horsepower (HP) rating of the motor driver and the environmental category in which the equipment is located.

For safety related rotating equipment located in a Category I Environment, the offcct of this realignment was to discontinue specific inspections and shaf t rotations for small (7.5 HP or less) equipment.

We bring to your attention that deletion of these shaf t rotations constitutes a departure from the inspector's comment on shaft rotations as stated in Inspection Report No. 50/508/88-01.

However, this decision has been carefully reviewed and it is based on sound engineering analyses and preservation experience consistent with the need to demonstrate acceptable integrity of the preserved equipment.
