While performing routine surveillance calibration testing with the

!. reactor shutdown, the " circulator 1A bearing drain pressure low"

! switch (PDIS-21321) was found to be out of tolerance per the limits specified in LCO 4.4.1, Table 4.4-3.

This condition is reportable per Fort St. Vrain Technical Specification AC 7.5.2(b)1 and AC 7.5.2(b)2, because. reactor operation had taken place since the last successful surveillance l

calibration.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

On December 8, 1981, while the reactor was shutdown and cooled down,

~

instrument personnel performed the helium circulator drain pressure calibration check. This surveillance is required at each refueling period; however, due to a lengthy shutdown for a. major. system modification, the surveillance was initiated at this time also.

There are twelve helium circulator bearing drain pressure low switches, three per circulator. When two of the three switches for a circulator operate, the circulator will trip. The LCO 4.4.1 limit for the switch trip settings is greater than or equal to 5 psid per Table 4.4-3, item 5. The results of the surveillance performed on December 8, 1981, for Loop 1 are listed in Table 1.

The surveillance requirer each switch to close at 6.5 1 1 psid.

PDIS-21321 for "A" circuistor was found to close at 0.0 psid. The remaining two channels on the 1A circulator were coerable per the Technical Specificatinns.

CAUSE DESCRIPTION:

Upon investigation of the switch internals, it was found that the low pressure trip contacts had a dirt and oil accumulation. This buildup prevented the contact from operating at the desired setpoint of 6.5 il psid.

4 7-CORRECTIVE' ACTION:

The switch internals were thoroughly cleaned and checked. -The switch was then re-adjusted to the correct trip setting o f. 6.5 psid. The l_

switch was-retested and found_to operate correctly.

No further correcti_ve action is anticipated or reoutred.
