GENERIC LETTER 88-14, "INSTRUMENT AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM PROBLEMS AFFECTING SAFETY"RELATED E(}UIPMENT" The subject Generic Letter, requested that each licensee perform 'a design and operations verification of their, instrument air, system. A reply within 180 days was requested which for, HNP-2 would be February 23, 1989 based upon an August 23, 1988 receipt date.

Response to this request represents a significant commitment of resources by the Supply System including 1800 man hours of contractor, assistance. Also, it is expected that testing will be required that must wait for, our. 1989 spring refueling outage, currently scheduled for April 14 to June 6.

At this time we know that a complete response to the Generic Letter can not be provided by February 23, 1989. By this date we will provide the follow-ing:

1) A summary of the completed review of the manufacturer's recommenda-tions for, air, quality and a description of required tests to establish that the required air quality is provided. The tests will not have been performed by this date.

2) A summary of the completed verification of the review of maintenance practices and emergency procedures. He will not be reporting on the training review.

3) A summary of the current status of the design verification review of the safety-related instrument air, systems.

By April 14, 1989 we will provide additional information on the design verifi-cation review. A final report, including outage test results, will be provided by July 7, 1989.
