WASHINGTON PUBLIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM P.O. Box 968 ~ 3000 George Washington Way ~ Richland, Washington 99352 Docket No. 50-397 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission G02-88-155 Attn: Document Control Desk July~.,L5>':1988 Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

NUCLEAR PLANT NO. 2 FIRE PROTECTION AND SAFE SHUTDOWN CAPABILITY RESPONSE TO SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT, SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Reference:

1) Letter G02-88-090, GC Sorensen (SS) to NRC, same subject, dated April 15, 1988
2) Letter G02-88-136, GC Sorensen (SS) to NRC, same subject, dated June 3, 1988 Refer ence 1 provided additional information on eight questions remaining from the staff's Safety Evaluation Report addressing fire protection and safe shutdown capability at WNP-2. The response to question 4 required submittal of a calculation analyzing the structural integrity of specific support steel configurations for instrument sensing lines. Originally, the calculation was scheduled to be submitted by May 15, 1988, however, as related in reference 2, this schedule was deferred due to high priority outage rel ated work until af ter July 15, 1988. Accordingly, the calculation (attached) has been completed and is submitted to satisfy the above commitment. As noted in the calculation, protection of the hangers or modification of tube clamp bolting is required to ensure that associated instrument lines do not fail due to support collapse during a design basis fire. In the interim, until these modifications are completed, those areas containing the specific support steel configuration remain on a fire watch in accordance with the WNP-2 Technical Specifications.

Should you have fur ther questions regarding this submittel, please contact Mr. A. G. Hosier, Manager, WNP-2 Licensing.
