Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief e~Z~

Licensing Branch No. 2 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission q

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

Subject:

NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 2 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION fOR SEISMIC QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY RELATED WNP-2 E(UIPMENT

Reference:

a) Telephone Conversation between Dr. T.Y. Chang (NRC), J.N. Singh (EGtmG), J.E. Rhoads (SS),

R.W. Hickman (SS), and J.C. Sullivan (SS),

dated February 8, 1982 b) Letter, G02-81-0315, G.D. Bouchey (SS) to A. Schwencer (NRC), "Seismic and Hydrodynamic gualification Status", dated September 25, 1981 Reference (b) is the Supply Systems's submittal of information for the S(RT review.

During the conversation (reference (a)) Dr. Chang noted these three (3) areas of concern:

1. The answer to question 271.01 included interim criteria for eval-uating pipe mounted equipment. Dr. Chang requested a schedule for the verification that the interim criteria is indeed conser-vative.

Answer: The final piping analysis of the first system will be ava~aable in June, 1982. The review of the analysis to show that the actual accelerations are less than those shown in the interim criteria will begin in July, 1982. The availability of final analyses on subsequent systems and their review will be on a con-tinuing basis, and will be completed before fuel load.

2. Dr. Chang requested that the safety-related mechanical equipment list include passive equipment such as tanks, filters, etc.

Answer: Attachment I to this letter is an updated safety-related mechanical equipment list for WNP-2. It includes all updates to the list made since September 25, 1981, and includes all level 1 and 2 equipment, except passive valves. The equipment is listed with the active components preceeding the passive components.

Otherwise, the list is by part number.

3. Dr. Chang questioned whether a component with multi-modal response could be qualified by using single frequency testing.

Answer: The criteria for accepting single frequency testing for qual>fication of multi-frequency equipment is Attachment 5.5 to Engineering Departmental Instruction 4.8, which is enclosed as Attachment 2. You will find that these are rigorous requirements for qualification by the use of single frequency tests.

Very truly yours, G. D. Bouchey Deputy Director, Safety'nd Security RWH/jca Attachments cc: R Auluck- NRC TY Chang NRC WS Chin BPA R Feil NRC Site JN Singh EG8IG
