Dear Dr. Grace:

l

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station l Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-29 Raychem Shrinkable Tubing, l Update on Reportability Determination AECM-86/0409 This letter is provided to document conversations with Mr. H. Dance of .

your staff held December 12, 1986. Recent inspection activities regarding l environmentally sealed splices at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station were described l in the Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) letter AECM-86/0355, dated ,

November 17, 1986. The subject splices were sealed using Raychem shrinkable l tubing.

As reported in AECM-86/0355, prudent measures were taken to repair certain splices in which the inspection's acceptance criteria was not met. At the time AECM-86/0355 was filed, a final reportability determination on "as-found" conditions was expected to be completed by December 15, 1986. Delays have been experienced in an industry testing program in which MP&L is participatir.g.

These delays will necesitate a subsequent delay in MP&L's reportability determination.

The testing program, being undertaken by Commonwealth Edison, includes numerous Raychem tubing configurations found in both BWR and PWR applications.

A testing report applicable to BWR's is expected to be complete in late January 1987; therefore, a final reportability determination on GGNS specific "as-found" configurations is now scheduled to be completed in February 1987. As l
