Failure of ASCOA Deluge Valves AECM-85/2-0009

(1) AECM-34/0212, 4/6/84 (2) AECM-84/2-0009, 5/31/84 On March 19, 1984, Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) notified Mr. P. Frederickson, of your office, of a Reportable Deficiency at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) Unit 1. The deficiency concerned the failure of two Automatic Sprinkler Corporation of America (ASCOA) deluge valves to open upon receipt of an actuation signal.

Written notification and followup reporting on Unit I was done by Reference (1) and (2) but no determination of reportability of this deficiency had been made for Unit 2 at that time. In Reference (2), MP&L stated that a final report on Unit 2 was expected to be submitted by June 14, 1985.

It has been concluded that the subject condition is not reportable under the provisions of 10CFR21 for Unit 2, since the valves have not been received by MP&L. MP&L has also concluded that the subject condition is not reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) for Unit 2.
