Thisletterservesaswrittennotificationofaspi~ofethyleneglycolwhichoccurredattheCookNuclearPlant~ThespillwaspreviouslyreportedviatelephonecallstoMr.PelcaroftheNationalResponseCenter(ReportI293482,)andtotheMichiganDNRPollutionEmergencyAlertSystem(PEAS)Operator24.Thespilloccurredatapproximately2:00p.m.onMay30,1995,whenacontractedservicetechnicianwastroubleshootingaportableweldingmachine.Whiletakingelectricalreadingsontheengine-poweredportableweldingmachine,currentmeterprobesbecameentangledinthefanblades,puncturingtheradiatorcoils.Approximately1gallonofantifreezesolution(ethyleneglycol)wasspilledtotheground.Theenginewasshutdownimmediately,andapproximately2cubicfeetoftheglycolsoakedsandwasquicklyshoveledintoadrum,leavingnovisualevidenceofcontaminationontheground.Inresponsetothisevent,theservicetechnicianandhismanagementwereappraisedofthereportabilityofthisevent.Theywereinstructedtoexercisecautionwhenservicingequipmentcontainingpollutingmaterialstopreventtheirreleasetotheenvironment.Additionally,wearereplacingethyleneglycolcoolantwithpropyleneglycolcoolant,inportableengineequipmentastheyarescheduledforpreventativemaintenance.r9'507100189950b30PDRADOCK05000315SPDR Mr.FredMorleyJune8,1995Page2,Xfyouhaveanyquestionsorrequirefurtherinformation,pleasecontactmeat(616)465-5901,extension1153.Sincerely,//CJohnP.Carlson,EnvironmentalSupervisorc:ThomasLeep-MDNRLarryPointer-MDNR
