RE: Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Oil Spill This letter confirms the reporting of an oil spill by telephone

, to Chuck Bikfalzy, DNR Plainwell district, at 8:54 a.m. EST on April 10, 1987. This is written notification as required by the Cook Plant's NPDES permit.

At approximate'ly 7: 45 a.m. on April 10, 1987, a plant employee attempted to measure the level in the east-middle heating boiler fuel oil tank. When the fill cap was removed, the apparently pressurized tank sprayed out an estimated ten gallons of No. 2 fuel oil. Most of the oil was contained within the surrounding spill contai.nment, however, a small amount entered a yard drain.

Cleanup efforts began immediately,, and included placement of oil sorbent pads and booms. It was estimated that one gallon or less reached Lake Michigan, and most of the oil causing the sheen was recovered.

The National Response Cent& was contacted earlier at 8:37 a.m.
