Dear Mr. Zugger:
RE:
Donald C.
Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. MI 0005827 Prefilter Backwash Limitations Richard C. Menge Senior Vice President 219 425 2103 A
sample taken on September 19, 1988 of the water makeup prefilter backwash (Outfall OOF) indicated a
suspended solids concentration (TSS) of 284 mg/l.
Also the average TSS for outfall OOF during September was 112 mg/1.
The operating log of the prefilter unit showed normal operation.
High solids in the intake from Lake Michigan appear to have caused the problem.
Rough lake conditions were noted at that time and have persisted to the present time.
There was an inadvertent delay in the plant's reporting procedure when the plant did not communicate the analytical test results to Environmental Affairs.
Plant personnel involved in this reporting procedure have been reminded about the need to evaluate and report analyses promptly.
By copy of this
- letter, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is notified pursuant to the requirements of Appendix B, Part II, Nonradiological Environmental Protection
- Plan, Section 3.2.
Very truly yours, W~~ d.
