Dear Mr. Zugger:

RE: Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. HI0005827 The referenced permit authorizes the discharge of treated groundwater to Lake Hichigan as part of the groundwater remediation demonstration project.

The daily maximum limit for Total Recoverable Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TRPH) is 0.5 mg/l. On November 2, 1989, we were notified that a sample collected on October 6, 1989, contained 0.9 mg/1 TRPH.

Due to the relative absence of product in this influent, and in intermediate stages in the treatment process, we believe this result to be an anomalous value. The 0.9 mg/1 value is still below the 1.0 mg/1 detection level of EPA Test Method 418.1 (for TRPH).

Also, due to an oversight, the influent total suspended solids and pH samples required for the Short Term Naste Characterization Study were not collected until the fifth week of system operation. These samples will be collected weekly for the duration of the demonstration project and submitted to the MDNR as required.
