MENGE Mr. John Bantjes Vice President Surface Water Quality Division Department of Natural Resources P. O. Box 355 Plainwell, Michigan 49080
Dear Mr. Bantjes:
SUBJECT:
Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. MI 0005827 Monitoring Requirements - Unit #1 The discharge permit requires that circulating water intake and dis-charge temperatures be monitored three (3) times daily, equally spaced over a 24-hour period. A recording instrument from which these temperatures were obtained failed at 0400 hours November 7, 1986 due to a faulty servo-motor. The unit was repaired and returned to service at 1100 hours November 10, 1986. Although no manual temperature readings were taken during the recorder failure, there is no reason to believe any unusual temperature conditions existed. Circulating Water System Environmental Data Sheets are being revised to indicate alternative sampling procedures when the temperature recorder is inoperative. By copy of this letter, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is notified pursuant to the requirements of Appendix B, Part II, Nonradiological Environmental Protection Plan, Section 3.2.
