Dear Mr. Zugger:

RE: Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. MI 0005827 Boiler Blowdown With both nuclear steam supply systems out of service, the plant heating boiler was started on July 16, 1985.

A blowdown sample taken at 0600 hours0.00694 days
0.167 hours
9.920635e-4 weeks
2.283e-4 months
on October 22, 1985 contained a suspended solids concentration of 169 PPM. Another sample taken at 0910 hours0.0105 days
0.253 hours
0.0015 weeks
3.46255e-4 months
October 23, 1985 had a concentration of 195 PPM.

Since chemical treatment is made by batch addition, we believe the elevated solids level is due to chemical shock.

By copy of this letter, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is notified pursuant to the requirements of Appendix B, Part II, Nonradiological, Environmental Protection Plan, Section 3.2.

Very truly yours, l.

Dear Mr. Zugger:

RE: Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant NPDES Permit No. MI 0005827 Steam Generator Blowdown While in the process of returning Unit 2 to service, a steam generator blow-down sample taken at 2200 hours0.0255 days
0.611 hours
0.00364 weeks
8.371e-4 months
on October 19, 1985 had a suspended solids concentration of 2442 PPM.

The elevated solids level is most likely the result of the recent cleaning of the Unit 2 steam generators. The unit has been idle since August 24, 1985.

By copy of this letter, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is notiified pursuant to the requirements of Appendix B, Part II, Nonradiological, Environmental Protection Plan, Section 3.2.

Very truly yours, Richard C. Menge Vice President RCM/df c: J. G. Keppler - NRS, Region III W. G. Smith, Jr.
