AUG 2 61985 Tennessee Valley Authority ATTN: Mr. H. G. Parris Manager of Power and Engineering (Nuclear) 6N11 B Missionary Ridge Place 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, TN 37402-2801 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

SEQUOYAH RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS (REP) EXERCISE DATE DOCKET NOS. 50-327 AND 50-328 This letter is in response to your letter dated July 11, 1985, requesting approval for thanging the 1986 exercise date from February to July 1986. The Region II office has no objections to your rescheduling two months beyond the initial date that was submitted. This decision is consisten0 with guidance given in recent IE Notice No. 85-55 entitled " Revised Emergency Exercise Frequency Rule." To reiterate the intent of this IE Notice, the NRC staff has determined that licensees should conduct exercises involving onsite participation at least once each calendar year (annually) and joint exercises involving the participation of offsite agencies at least once every second calendar year (biennially). In view of this interpretation, the requested date of July 1986 does not require an exemption request or special approval. This date satisfies the requirements regarding onsite participation at lease once each calendar year.

If there are any qu3stions regarding this matter, contact Mr. W. E. Cline of our staff at FTS 242-2665.

Sincerely, Roger D. Walker, Director
