This refers to the special safety inspection conducted by Mr. N. R. Williamsen of this office on October 27-31, 1986, of activities at your Hematite facility authorized by NRC Special Nuclear Material License No. SNM-33, and to the

, discussion of our findings with Mr. J. A. Rode and others at the conclusion of the inspection. '

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and interviews with personnel.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this 4

inspection.

Also discussed and agreed to during the October 31, 1986, meeting was your

committment to mail out requests for letters of agreement or updates with the various offsite agencies that would provide services in case of a radiological i emergency. Your follow-through on that committment and the agencies' responses will be examined during the next inspection.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
