This is in response to your letter of February 12, 1987, concerning the decomissioning of the evaporation ponds as required by Condition 19 of License No. SNM-33.
Although you have expended considerable effort to reduce the average residual contamination, further information (see enclosure) will be required to comply with our Branch Technical Position. Upon receipt of this information, the NRC will perform a survey to confirm the results.
Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me at (301) 427-4510.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL'INFORMATION
. DECOMMISSIONING OF EVAPORATION PONDS 1.
The water samples for-the ponds appear to have high alpha / beta concentration.
If the radioactive material is soluble, the Option 2 limits would be 100 pCi/ gram. Accordingly, please provide the results of the solubility test on the uranium in the ponds.
2.
Please provide a characterization of the residual inventory of radioactive materials in the ponds. This will require an isotopic analysis of core samples from a gridded area.
3.
Provide the analysis of the well water for gross. alpha and beta that were
~
performed since installing the wells, Any-isotopic data available should also be provided.
4.
Provide the analysis of the Tc-99 concentrations in a composite sample for each pond, as specified in Amendment No. 3, License Condition 19, dated October 3, 1984.
