Decommissioning of Former Evaporation Ponds

(A) CE (R. Sharkey) letter to NRC (M. Weber), dated October 22,1997
Dear Dr. Soong:
Pursuant our conversations, Combustion Engineering, Inc. (CE) has determined that uranium is present in the Evaporation Pond at depth. The uranium concentrations are measurable at depth sixteen feet below ground surface.
The intent of CE section 4.2 in letter dated October 22,1997, was to implement NUREG-5849 methodology for measuring residual surface activity. Measurable uranium concentration at depth was not expected. In order to accurately characterize uranium at depth, core sampling will be taken, and a statistical analysis will be performed to demonstrate compliance with the recommendation criteria.
