On January 22,1988, at 0200 hours0.00231 days
0.0556 hours
3.306878e-4 weeks
7.61e-5 months
, the Electrical Motor Driven Fire Pump (FP-P-1) was declared out of service for corrective maintenance. During operation of the fire pump on January 21,1988, a packing leak was detected. The pump was shutdown and a maintenance word request was generated to repair the fire pump.

Repair activities began on January 22,1988, to replace the packing. The packing is in the discharge diffuser area of the pump casing. This necessitates disassembly of the entire pump shaft casing to replace the spring loaded packing seal assembly. Since repair requires sending the pump assembly offsite to a vendor facility, it was anticipated that repair activities would not be completed within the seven (7) day period allowed by ACTION Statement "a" of Technical Specification 3.7.14.1. Therefore this Special Report is being generated in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Specification 3.7.14.1.

The fire pump (Peerless Pump, Model 16 HXB) has been removed from the system and was sent offsite on February 12,1988, for overhaul by a vendor service representative. The cause for the failed packing is believed to be normal wear.

Interim corrective action being taken until the fire pump is returned to service involves the addition of a temporary diesel-engine driven fire pump (Joy Model 7063-7000) to supply the fire suppression system. ,
