Dear Mr. Schwencer:

In oraer to resolve a question raiscj by Mr. W. Hodges of the Reactor Systems Branch regarding the potential for flashing i n the LaSalle County ECCS suction lines, the enclosea information is submittea. This transmittal accuments information provicea in a conference call with Messrs. A. Bournia and W. Hodges, and discusses

        *line routings ano calculations performed incluaing all assumotions and cata requireo.            In aadition, sheet 6 of ar.islyt ic al; RH-9 7 and sheet 1 of analytical RH-37 are enclosed to iaentify tne routing of the point chosen for this discussion. That point was chosen to be the highest elbow locatea the greatest distance from the suppression pool in the ECCS line with the longest equivalent length (LPCI suction line B). A minimum                   margin of 12.1 feet of heaa exists for this limiting elbow.

If there are any further questions in this regara, please airect them to this office. In as much as there is no formal question in this subject, FSAR documentation will not be made. Forty copies of this letter and the ariclosure are proviced for your use. Very truly yours,

t Check for Flashing in ECCS Suction Lines Flashing occurs when the vapor pressure of the liquid is equal to or greater than the static pressure of the liquid at that point. To determine if flashing can occur in any of the ECCS suction lines a calculation was performed to determine the local static pressure at the highest elbow located the greatest distance from the suppression pool in the ECCS suction line with the - longest equivalent length (LPCI suction line B) . First, the total pressure in the elbow is determined, then the dynamic pressure is subtracted to find the static pressure. The following data and assumptions were used in the calculations. Pool temperature ll2*F Minimum pool water level 699.54' (l.ased on low water level alarm minus instrument accuracy) Pump maximum flow 8400 ppm (based on system resistance with all valves wide open for inje.ction.and spray) Schedule 40 Pipe-Strainer 50% plugged has loss of 1.6 psid (manufacturers data) Pipe routing as shown on the attached "for record" analytical drawings 1 psi @ 212' = 2.407' of water (conversion factor) Suppression pool at atmospheric pressure (14.7 psig) The total pressure (H,) at the elbow is equal to the atmospheric pressure plus the head of water minus the permanent flow losses in the strainer and piping. E = 14.7 (2.407) + (699.54-681.17) - 1.6 (2.407)-1.2' t H = 35.4 + 18.4 - 3.9 - 1.2 t H *
