During normal operation, while 1A instrument air compressor was cleared out
^ for maintenance,1C instrument air compressor tripped leaving only IB instru-ment air compressor in service.
This resulted in a degraded mode of LCO 4.3.6 and is reportable per Fort St.
Vrain Technical Specification AC 7.5.2(b)2.
2 EVENT DESCRIPTION:
At 2030 hours0.0235 days <br />0.564 hours <br />0.00336 weeks <br />7.72415e-4 months <br /> on February 4,1981, while operating at 65% thermal power and 199 Mi(e),1C instrument air compressor tripped on high discharge air temp-erature. Since 1A instrument air compressor was cleared out at this time for af ter-cooler maintenance, only 1B instrument air compressor was operable.
LCO 4.3.6 requires at least two instrument air compressors to be operable during power operation.
Plant operations personnel checked the compressor, increased the cooling wa'.er flow by opening the temperature control valve bypass, and returned the air compressor to service.
-Repairs to lA instrument air compressor were completed, and the unit returned to service at 1910 hours0.0221 days <br />0.531 hours <br />0.00316 weeks <br />7.26755e-4 months <br /> on February 5,1981.
CAUSE DESCRIPTION:
-lC instrume.nt air compressor tripped on high discharge air temperature due to fouling of . the cooling water jacket. The fouling is a continuous process and- requires periodic cleaning o' the cooling water jacket. As fouling in-creases, the cooling wate : temperature con".rol valve bypass is opened to admit extra service water to the compressor until a point is reached when cleaning is required.

lA instrument air co:npressor was cleared out at this time for tube repairs of its after-cooler.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
i The plant operators inspected the air compressor, increased the cooling water flow by opening the bypass, and returned IC instru:nent air ccaressor to service.
lA -instrument air cc:npressor af ter-cooler repair was completed, and the air compressor returned to service the following day, February 5,1981.
On February 23,1981, with 1A- and 13 insert: ment air co= pressor in servie.e, IC instrument air cc= pressor was taken out of service for inspection and cleaning of the after-cooler.
No further corrective action is anticipated or required.
