CookNuclearPlanthasinstalled atemporary, skid-mounted, ice-making systemtoreplenish theboratediceintheplant'sicecondensers.

Theskidhasbeenprovidedwithaspillcontainment system.OnJune23,1998,at1900hrs,theice-making system'sdischarge line,containing aweaksodiumtetraborate

solution, developed aleakandoversprayed thecontainment, spillingapproximately 50gallonstotheground.Wecalculate thatapproximately 0.7lbs.ofboronand0.8lbs.ofsodiumweredischarged totheground.Whentheleakwasdiscovered, thesystemwasshutdownandtheleakwasstopped.Theleakwasrepairedpriortorestarting thesystem.Thecauseoftheleakwasexcessive vibration andwearagainstthedischarge line.Thedischarge linesupportshavebeenredesigned topreventexcessive wearontheline.OnJune26,1998,at1410hrs,the.ice-making system'sdischarge line,containing aweaksodiumtetraborate

solution, wasaccidentally cutduringworktoimprovethesystemdesign.Thecutleakedapproximately 30gallonstotheground.Wecalculate thatapproximately 0.5lbs.ofboronand0.5lbs.ofsodiumweredischarged totheground.Thelinewasreplacedandthesystemwasrealigned topreventfurtherfailures.

Thegroundwherethespilloccurredwasexcavated andproperlydisposed.
