UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN ON SEPTEMBER 12, 1985, DUE TO A FIRE IN THE TURBINE GENERATOR ENCLOSURE, UPDATE AS OF SEPTEMBER 13, 1985 The licensee declared an unusual event at 10:30 am (PDT) 9/12/85 due to a turbine trip / reactor trip caused by a fire in the main turbine exciter enclosure in Unit 2.            The Headquarters duty officer was notified at 10:58 am (PDT).
The event was terminated at 10:55 am (PDT) 9/12/85 after the fire was extinguished.
The licensee's investigations as of 9/13/85 indicate that the fire was caused by electrical arcing between the generator exciter bus bars due to carbon build-up from the exciter brushes. The licensee's examination of the lube oil and generator hydrogen seal systems indicates that they were not involved in the fire. A cooling fan attached to the exciter shaft also failed and impacted the exciter enclosure and generator enclosure causing deformation of the enclosures. The licensee expects Unit 2 to be shut down in excess of.
one week. The licensee is considering utilizing exciter brush assemblies from Unit 3 to repair Unit 2 (Unit 3 is scheduled to shut down for a refueling outage next week).
This information is current as of 8:00 am, September 13, 1985.
