SUBJECT:

SEISMIC EVENT At 0647 (PDT) on 7/13/86 an earthquake occurred 40 miles northwest of San Diego at 32.9' North by 117.9' West. The earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and was accompanied by several aftershocks measuring up to 4.9. Some damage, such as broken windows, was reported in the Laguna area about 10 miles northwest of the site. The event was felt at the site and actuated seismic alarms and recording instruments. The magnitude measured at the site was .02 to .03g .

An Unusual Event was declared for all three units at 0702 (PDT). Procedures were implemented which provide for visual inspection of plant equipment for all three units and no abnormal conditions were noted. The units operating conditions at the time were Unit #1 at 0% power, Unit 2 at 100Z power and Unit 3 at 86% power. The Unusual Event was terminated at 0801.

State and local agencies were notified and representatives of EDO, Public Affairs, and representatives of Commissioners Bernthal, Zech, and Roberts were briefed at 0830 by regional management.

Additionally, three non-power reactors, docket numbers 50-326, 50-89, and 50-102, (one TRIGA at the University of California at Irvine and two TRICAS at G. A. Technologies, San Diego) felt the effects of the earthquake. The GA Mark F was operating at the time. The Mark F is equipped with a saismic trip designed to activate at 8 on the modified eercalli scale. The trip did not activate. The TRIGA at U.C. Irvine was not operating at the time but it's seismic trip set at 5 on tha modified mercalli did activate. No damage was observed at either facility.

Southern California Edison issued a press release on the earthquake today.
