SUBJECT:

POTENTIAL HAND EXPOSURE OF 512 REM-UPDATE On3ite NRC inspection has confirmed the licensee is dedicating sufficient resources and man:gement attention to resolve the potential extremity exposure in a timelv manner.

The NRC Region V medical consultant has conferred with the licensees physician with rcep:ct to biological indicators that might be considered in evaluating the extent of cxpo:ure. The Region V Chief, Facilities Radiological Protection Section, after intcrviewing the individual involved, members of the licensees staff and reviewing d:cuments finds the potential exposure cannot easily be attributed to a particular tv:nt or job assignment. The most likely source of exposure that could have resulted in a dose of this magnitude would involve direct contact of the worker's hand with small specks of fuel previously observed at the facility.

Th3 worker has not observed any symptoms typically associated with a large dose of radiation to cn extremity.

Thi licensee had issued a press release.

This information is current as of 4:30 P.M., PST, 12/16/86.
