EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

. The HQ duty officer received a report from FEMA that at 7:25 am, PST, on l February 11, 1988, a moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scele, hit the  !

Whittier, California area in Southern California. i i

i Region V was notified at approximately 8:00 am, PST. l The National Earthquake Information Center at Golden, Colorado, indicated the )

earthquake was 4.7 on the Richter Scale, centered 10 miles northwest of Whittier, {

j California, on the Whittier Narrows fault. j l

l San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (approximately 45 miles southwest of Whittier, i Ca.) was aware of the earthquake; however, no seismic alarms were activated at the three units. No damage has been identified at the site. At the time of the quake, '

Unit 1 was at 92% power and Units 2 and 3 were at 100%.

l The University of California, Irvine, TRIGA reactor is located about 30 miles S.E. of l the apparent epicenter. The UC Irvine radiation safety officer reported at 8:35 am, PST, that the reactor was shut down at the time of the earthquake and that a cursory survey did not identify any damage.
