X Notification of Unusual Event DOCKET NO. 50-206/361/362 Alert SAN CLEMENTE, CA Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA At 7:42 a.m. PDT on October 1, 1987, a moderate earthquake was experienced at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating site. Seismic alarms were received in all three units' control rooms. The licensee declared an Unusual Event at 7:50 a.m. PDT, October 1,1987, per procedure. Inspection and increased surveillance were initiated. No damage has been identified at the site. At the time of the quake, Unit I was at 92%, Unit 2 was shutdown for refueling, and Unit 3 was at 98%.

At this time, Region V has received a report that the Southern California Edison Company's Corporate Headquarters, located near the epicenter, has been temporarily evacuated to inspect for structural damage.

The National Earthquake Information Center at Golden, Colorado, indicated the earthquake was 6.1 on the Richter Scale, centered in Montebello, California, (approximately 45 miles northwest of San Onofre).

The University of California, Irvine. TRIGA reactor, is located about 30 miles S.E. of the apparent epicenter. The UC Irvine reactor supervisor reported at 8:35 a.m. PDT, that the reactor had been previously shut down at the time of the earthquake and that a cursory survey did not identify any damage. The earthquake was felt at the facility and a follow-up inspection found no damage. The seismic trip which did actuate, was set at 6 on the Mercalli scale.

The GA Triga reactors are located about 90 miles S.E. of the apparent epicenter.

The physicist in charge reported at 8:45 a.m. PDT, that the Mark F reactor was operating and one operator thought he felt the quake. There was no damage at the facility.

Operators at Diablo Canyon (about 200 miles from the epicenter) and at Palo Verde (about 300 miles from the epicenter) did not observe the earthquake.

/This information is current as of 9:30 a.m., PDT, October 1,1987.
