SUBJECT:

AFTERSH0CK FROM OCTOBER 1 EARTHQUAKE A significant aftershock from the October 1, 1987 earthquake was experienced at 3:59 am PDT on' October 4,1987. The aftershock registered 5.5 on the Richter scale and was centered at the same location, Whittier, California. Seismic instruments were actuated at San Onofre 1 but not at San Onofre 2 and 3. The instruments actuate at 0.0149, but less than that value was actually recorded. Southern California Edison declared an Unusual Event at 4:13 am PDT.- .The Unusual Event.was terminated at 6:14 am after inspections and surveillance determined that.no damage to plant equipment had resulted. An NRC resident inspector had been at the site shortly before the aftershock occurred and returned after the Unusual Event was declared to follow the licensee's actions.

The University of California-Irvine reactor supervisor reported at 9:00 am PDT on October 5 that the reactor was shutdown at the time of the aftershock, and that an inspection of the facility, had found no damage.
