On F;bruary.23, 1987, the licensee informed Region V by telephone that they were i

, making a press release describing the discovery of a small particle of radioactive.

material in the residence of a plant employee. .

The particle was discovered on February 21, 1987, by a plant health physics'

-technician during a self-initiated survey of his here. The particle was found in his rug. The particle was returned to the site, analyzed, and found to be an

? 1rradiated fuel fragment of 0.08 micrecuries (principle isotopes observed were Ce-141,Ce/Pr-144,Ru/Rh-103,and106). <

< The licensee has been experiencing a problem with fuel fratrents for about two years. The fragments are the result of leaking fuel pins. The licensee has implemented special mitigating measures in an effort to control exposure from the fragments.

Region V is continuing a trecial inspection effort to evaluate the adequacy of the special precautions taken by the licensee to control personnel cypesures associated
