SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN FOR GREATER THAN 48 HOURS At 2202 PST on January 16, 1988, Southern California Edison commenced a reactor shutdown as a result of alarms on the main generator hydrogen detraining unit.

The licensee investigated these alarms and found that there was a leak of hydrogen into the stator cooling water system within the main generator.

The licensee removed the four hydrogen coolers from the generator casing to facilitate an inspection. Maintenance personnel have performed visual and sonic inspections and have used a helium detection unit to detemine the source of the hydrogen leakage. However, as of 1200 on January 19, 1988, the leak has not been found. The licensee will continue to inspect the cooling water system and expects to return the plant to service within 48 to 72 hours8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
after the source of the hydrogen leakage can be found and repaired.

The resident inspectors are following the licensee's corrective actions.
