Describe (if i applicable), the effect (including ash thickness ranges) of 1 each of the above larger events, as well as any smaller ash j fall on the WPPSS 3 and 5 site. 4 j Response Recent Mt. St. Helens volcanism resulted in three major ash falls on , May 18, May 25, and June 12, 1980. Only the May 25, 1980 eruption , deposited ash at the WNP-3/5 site, which is located approximately 82 miles northwest of Mt. St. Helens. That eruption deposited approximately
- . 1/8 inch of ash at the site. The May 18, 1980 eruption's ash plume
- traveled in an east-northeast direction. The June 12, 1980, ash was j carried to the southwest by low altitude winds and to the north by
! high altitude winds. Consequently, no ash accumulations were measured
- at the WNP-3/5 site due to either the May 18 or June 12, 1980 eruptions.
) The only sijnificant effect at the WNP-3/5 site from the May 25, 1980, i ash fall was hazardous driving conditions due to rain mixing with the

Response
Only the May 25, 1980, eruption of Mt. St. Helens deposited ash at the WNP-3/5 plant site. Ashfall thickness for the site region was highly variable due to the local surface winds and ranged from 1/16 to 1/4 inch. Workers at the WNP-3/5 construction site reported approximately 1/8 inch total ash accumulation. The May 25, 1980, eruption began at 0239 and the Portland weather radar reported that the ash plume had reached an altitude in excess of 40,000 feet by 0245.
