UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS

'On September 16, 1986, at 9:13 p.m., operators removed Salem Unit I from service.to repair a steam leak on the high pressure turbine steam return line to the moisture separator / reheaters (MSR) and reheat steam system.

Return to service is not expected until September 21 or 22. The cause of the leak was determined to be steam erosion on a section of 20-inch pipe that connects to the 44-inch MSR piping. The licensee is replacing the affected section of pipe (approxima-tely 12 inches in length). Welding will require pre and post weld heat treatment. The licensee is also examining other' areas of piping for similar problems.

The resident inspector is following the licensee's actions.

Tha States of New Jersey and Delaware have been notified.
