UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS At 8:30 p.m. on July 3,1987, Salem Unit 2 was removed from service to make repairs to the Nos. 21 and 22 low pressure turbines. Vibration and acoustic monitoring conducted during unit load increases during the period July 1 to July 3, resulted in identifying leakage by the steam inlet gaskets. Unit 2 is being maintained in Mode 4 (Hot Shutdown) at this time. The licensee expects to complete the turbine gasket repairs within 14 days.

The resident inspector is on site monitoring the licensee's actions.

The States of New Jersey and Delaware have been notified.
