Subject:

REACTOR TRIP, SAFETY INJECTION At 8:30 a.m. with the unit at 100% power, Salem Unit 2 experienced a turbine I trip / reactor trip and safety injection apparently resulting from troubleshooting being conducted on No. 22 steam generator level indication. Approximately 30 seconds later, a station blackout signal was received causing the vital busses to strip their loads, i

Component Cooling Water Pumps were stripped; control room operators then tripped all four reactor coolant pumps. Two out of three vital buses were picked up by the station cmergency diesel generators (EOG). One EDG was out of service for preventive maintenance. The SI and Unusual Event were terminated at 8:35 a.m..

Natural circulation was established followir.g the loss of the reactor coolant pumps and subsequently the third vital bus and nonvital loads were reenergized from offsite power. The plant is presently in a Hot Standby condition, with two reactor coolant pumps returned to service. The resident inspector is on site and following licensee actions. Two additional inspect.,rs and a manager have been dispatched from Region I to  ;

the site.

The state of New Jersey has been notified.
