REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM LCAK INSIDE CONTAINMENT CAUSES UNPL FACILITY SHUTDOWN The plant was shutdown at 1:27 p.m. on July 8, 1977, when a packing leak occurred on a 2" auxiliary spray valve inside containment. The leak was measured at 11 gpm and 13,000 gallons of primary coolant was released to the containment.

The water, which contained a radioactivity concentration of 10-4 ue/ml,was pumped from the containment sump to waste holdup tanks for processing.

'there were no releases of radioactive material to the environment or overexposure of personnel as a result of this event.

The plant was placed in cold shutdown and depressurized to repair the leaking valve. During the return to power operation, a minor steam leak developed on a Main Steam line drain valve with steam pressure at 200 g

m.

psig, and the plant was again placed in cold shutdown for valve repair.

Power operation is expected to resume on July 12, 1977.

The Media covered the story on July 8-10, 1977. The State of New Jersey has been informed.
