Public Service Electric & Gas Company X Notification of Unusual Event Salen Generating Station Unit 2 Alert Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey Site Area Emergency D/N 50-311 General Emergency Not Applicable Subjsct: STATION POWER TRANSFORMER (SpT) FAILURE - SHUTOOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS At 6:58 p.m. on September 11, 1986, Unit 2 tripped from 75% power. The reactor trip resulted from the loss of the Nos. 22 and 23 reactor coolant pumps because of the de-cnergization of the 2F and 2G 4160 volt non-vital busses. The busses were de-snergized as a result of an electrical failure which shorted both the No. 22 Station Power Transformer (one of two offsite power supplies) and one non-vital 230 volt transformer which steps voltage from 4160 volts (on the 2F bus) to 230 volts to supply smaller non-vital loads in the plant. In accordance with technical specifications, the unit entered cold shutdown at 10:10 a.m. on September 13. The plant will remain shut down until the No. 22 SPT is replaced. Repairs are expected to be completed by Saturday, September 20.

The resident inspectors will follow the licensee's actions to replace the No.22 SPT and will continue to follow up on the licensee's investigation into the cause of the alsctrical failure.

.This information is current as of 1:00 p.m. September 15, 1986.
