)
1 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-179 This areliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of
}_9SSI3LE safety or public interest significance. The information i plesented is as initially received without verification or evaluation _
3 1 is basically all that is known by IE' staff on this date.
Facility: Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 '
Public Service Electric and Gas Company '
Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey (DN50-272) '
Subject:
INADVERTENT RELEASE OF RADI0 ACTIVE LIQUID Due to an erroneous valve lineup, approximately 600 gallons of liquid waste were pumped to the circulating water discharge pipe instead of a tank l truck at about 6:00 p.m. on October 9, 1977.
The unit is in an outage and the circulating water system was shutdown.
It is estimated that approximately 0.01 curie was discharged. Isotopic I analysis of the waste liquid storage tank prior to the pumping evolution was:
Mn54 5.88 X 10-4 uC1/ml ~
gg '
7 CoS8 4.42 X 10-3 uC1/ml - -
Co60 2.69 X 10 .4 uCi/ml ._ ,, .. ,
The licensee's evaluation concludes that the stagnant discharge pipe (10 feet diameter by 500 feet long) will provide sufficient dilution such that concen- g
.trations will be below 10 CFR 20 Appendix B Table II values at the pipe
. discharge to the Delaware River. f. '
c River samples have indicated less than minimum detectable activity. Results of a discharge pipe sample will be available later today.

Media interest is expected because c' continued local interest in-plant -- 0:
operations. The State of New Jerssy has been informed. A press release
.is not planned by the licensee or NRC. ]
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by dg a. telephone call from the Shift Supcrvisor at 7:30 p.m. on October 9,1977.
