PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-186

The information presented is as initially received without veritication or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Public Service Electric and Gas Company Salem Unit 2 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey (DN50-311)
Subject:
CABLE TRAY FIRE At 5:00 AM on October 18, 1977 welding cables in contact with a cable tray located in the auxiliary building shorted, caught fire and caused damage to the cable tray and several safety related cables.
The fire was extinguished by site personnel.
Salem Unit 2 is under con-struction and is about 70% completed.
Media interest is expected because of the high interest in electrical fires and the aggressive news coverage of the facility.
The State of New Jersey has been informed.
